The Dawn 2 Dusk (D2D) results are now out for consumption. I must apologise for the delay in getting these out, but unfortunately we had a couple of riders/teams mistakenly or otherwise, ride through the timing area at the completion of a lap and again immediately after changing riders. A number of these where caught and spoken to on the day, but we still uncovered quite a number of 50 second laps and a few well under 5 minutes when analyzing individual results.
Anyway, the good news is that this did not change any of the results read out on the day.
Thanks to Hamish Seaton, New Zealand’s number one MTB timer and electronic wiz, for casting his eye over the results for me and removing the “anomalies”.
Thanks for your attendance, support or participation in this great event.
Look forward to seeing a number of you at the Mudbuster, Spring Fling, AKDH Series or back here next year for another D2D.

RESULTS / ATHLETES AWAY
Most peak domestic competitions are now done and dusted, and we have several national champions/podium finishes in a range of sports across all squads … good job!
We are heading into international competition, with the Waiariki action being:
- GOLF - Landyn is away with NZ Maori Team in Canada
- EXTREME KAYAK - Sam and Nikki K have been in action –Teva Mountain Games in the US – Nikki won, Sam was 5th (redeemed himself with a win in the Boater X). Sam headed to Italy, and along with fellow Rotorua boys Jared (yes, Meehan) and Mike Dawson won the Worlds Teams Race (and a nice heavy trophy for NZ).
- SLALOM KAYAK – Luuka and Aaron are both now in Europe prepping for World Cup races (first one is this weekend in France), before Worlds in Spain in September.
- MTB/BIKE – all riders have been selected to represent NZ (bar David whom is awaiting his bike arrivals from Sth Africa), so a fantastic achievement from this squad.
o Thomas Lindup kicks off the first Worlds Campaign – July, Canada (fundraiser at the Pig & Whistle this Thursday, upstairs from 7pm)
o Tania Carson heads to BMX Worlds in Adelaide, late July
o Simon represents NZ in the Tour of Tahiti, late July (yep…my pick of the destinations too!!)
o Monique Avery, Carl Jones, Katie, Scott Green and Matt Walker have MTB Worlds in Canberra late August.
o Monique, Ollie head to Xterra Worlds in October (Katie, Carl tbc)
- COACHING - John Lee (XC Coach) is heading to both MTB and Xterra Worlds, Jeff Carter (DH coach) is heading to MTB Worlds
2. EXTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS
- Luuka and Monique, along with coach John Lee, received Bay Trust Scholarships.
3. TEAM WAIARIKI EFFORTS
- There’s been some domination of key local events – always great to showcase our sporting brilliance to the region….!
o Kaimai Classic - Waiariki Chicks (aka Monique, Brooke, Katie) and Waiariki Dudes (aka Simon, Scott, Carl) won the 3-man teams race.
o Monty’s Revenge – Waiariki Chicks (Mon, Brooke, Katie) took out the womens team race.

Rotorua is hosting the finale of the UCI World Cup Series, with top athletes from all over the planet going head to head for the glory and the Gold… Trials is an exciting form of cycling with riders traversing extreme obstacles in six separate trial zones - skill, explosive strength and the all-important balance gene are well and truly on display. Tension rises as the riders complete each zone – one slip could lead to penalty points or even disqualification…It’s spectacular and entertaining. You can also get really close to the action and so it’s very spectator-friendly. Put September 11- 13 in your diary now.

D2D - 0700 – 1700 – Sunday 21st June 2009
Registration will be available on Saturday the 20th at the event village from 12.00 till 4.00pm.
It will commence on the Sunday the 21st from 0615hrs at the back gate.
1 number plate will be issued per team and this will have to stay with the rider/bike that is recording the lap.
0645 - the 1st trucks will leave the back gate area and travel to the start area. Riders can leave from the top as soon as the truck has stopped.
Riders can take any route down, even the road, All lines will be open - the only ones taped will be for safety reasons, i.e. where tracks meet or merge.
The finish line is at the event village which is at the bottom of the DH track. There will be an open transition area (off the main line) where riders/plates change over.
Rides will then pass through the timing tent where the lap will be recorded.
The queue for transport will be single file and the ‘load marshal’ will control this area.
He will decide a load order and guide riders to specific vehicles.
There should be no wait or should i say no queue to get on transport - worst case, 12 minute wait.
4; Safety gears - this is not classified as DH race, it is a Gravity Endurance Event and participation is the key. Hence the mandatory ruling of full face and armour is not in effect - as stated on the entry form”
‘Each rider is responsible for their bikes maintenance and all safety equipment.’
As always - the bike in front has right of way, if there is a faster rider coming from behind it is his duty to wait and pass where it is safe for both riders or take another line.
Lights may be an option for a 1st / last quick run - depends on the day light!
If you have any questions or querries, please contact me.
Also if you have a friend or partner willing to help out, again, please contact me.
See you there!

The recently completed Hatu Patu trail is rideable - well rideable for mtb zen masters. You can read all about it on the DOC website here. The trail is grade 5 - rooty, lots of off camber and sections you need to carry momentum to clear. There’s no signpost yet, but I’m sure it won’t be too far away. It starts at the top of the last descent of Tuhoto Ariki - the native bush trail that starts from the top of Tawa rd, in Whaka forest. Hatu Patu ends near the bottom of Billy T on Moerangi Rd. There was quite a process of consultation that the RMTBC went through to get the trail approved. The trail was surveyed with funding from the Lion Foundation and it has been constructed by spade and rake wielding volunteers led by Mike and Rob from Bike Culture Bike Shop, on Wed evening working bees through the summer. DOC helped out with chainsawing some of the fallen logs over the 1km - ish route. This is another cool addition to the track network, but be warned it is tricky, there’s only a couple of riders who have made it through with no dabs, so treat it as a challenge. There will be an official opening sometime closer to summer.
The RMTBC is in discussions with DOC, looking at suitable locations for an easier grade trail, something in the grade 2-3 range.

A fine but cool day and a firm fast track made for a great day of racing at this year’s Cateye Moonride. Consistent lap times and dedication from team members saw our two teams making the podium .
Rotorua XC Race Team Mixed ,with members Alexa Peters, Monique Avery, Ash Hough, Sam Osborne & James Hogg took out the 1st place in the 12 hour Mixed category ,1st place in the North Island Club Mixed trophy and were placed 6th overall.
Rotorua XC Race Team Two in the 12 hour 17 years & under with members Jeffery McDowell, Sam Shaw, Nigel McDowell, Conor Corbett & Jonathan Clark placed 2nd in the Junior Category, 1st in the North Island Club Junior trophy and 4th overall.
Many thanks to the support crew (parents)who were responsible for shelter, food, heating, lighting and motivation. They did a top job making conditions for the youngsters comparable to a five star hotel. They even made time to ride in the Older Dudes 12 hour category placing 5th & 24th overall.
